If you struggle with an itchy, unruly beard then you’re probably missing something very important in your daily grooming routine: beard oil. Knowing how often to use beard oil will help you make a drastic change over time in the texture, look, softness and scent of your beard hair. If you’re lucky, it may even promote some growth in any patchy, sparse areas. By understanding the benefits of beard oil and knowing how to apply it, you’ll quickly gain a footing on the road to the wonderful world of well-kept beards.
We know, we know. You’re probably thinking about the first paragraph and how we said “if you’re lucky, it MAY even promote some growth.” The ultimate misconception of beard oil is that it will act as magic elixir of overnight hair growth. That’s not how it works. It is intended to moisturize and soften the hair while breeding a healthy environment on the skin.
Depending on the ingredients used, beard oil offers a ton of benefits for your facial hair and skin. One of the main reasons why most people quit growing their beard out is because of the itching. If you don’t take care of your pores, skin and whiskers then you’re going to suffer the consequences! Using beard oil helps alleviate any discomfort and allows you to grow out the beard you’ve always dreamed of.
Beard oil really comes in handy for extra hydration. Our skin naturally produces sebum which helps lubricate our skin and face fuzz. Depending on how oily you are, it may not be enough to keep that beard from looking stiff and weathered. Adding additional conditioning agents will keep it shiny, soft and fragranced.
Applying beard oil isn’t rocket science, but there is a little bit of technique in it if you want to get the most out of it. Ideally, you’ll want to apply it after a hot shower so that your hair follicles and pores are open. This is recommended, but not mandatory. Be sure to dry your beard hair thoroughly though, as oil and water do not mix.
To start, drop a few drops in your hand and swirl it around to warm it up. How many drops you use will depend on the length and density of your beard. If you’re unsure, start with one or two and then add if needed.
Next, you’ll want to spread it throughout your whiskers, making sure to touch the skin. Rub it in nice and evenly until you feel that it has fully been absorbed. To get the most out of your application, consider using a boar bristle brush right after. The natural boar bristles are coarse enough to distribute oil evenly throughout the hair. Plus, you’ll want to re-shape that mug of yours right after you made it look all crazy.
This strategy comes down to the specific needs of your beard – if you have a super dry beard but your skin is a bit oily then you’ll probably want to apply beard oil once a day. If your beard is dry AND your skin is dry, consider applying it twice a day or in conjunction with another beard conditioning agent.
The time that you apply it is also dependent on your daily schedule. Some people shower before they start their day, so you may want to apply after your shower when you are getting ready. Others may use it as an overnight beard revitalization serum. If you have fungal infections in your beard or dry, flaky skin, you can apply a beard oil with the appropriate essential oil and let it work its magic overnight.
Applying beard oil any time before you step out of the house is also a great idea if you want to look sharp and give off a pleasant smell.
The major takeaway is, if the beard oil you are using is high quality and all natural, like ours is, then you can apply it as often as you like. The fine natural oils will only work to strengthen, scent and shine your beard the more often you apply it.
You may be able to find a decent beard oil at select drug stores and local retail stores. If you’re looking for higher quality oils that include the most beneficial essential oils, consider checking your local barbershop. It’s safe to assume that what they use on their clients is what they believe to be the crème de la crème.
If you’re more of the research-and-read-reviews type, then just type beard oil in the search bar and start browsing!
